The John Lyon School - 1st XI Cricket - End Of Term Reports

I haven't included people who didn't play after half-term, as their reports obviously have not changed.

CAPTAIN: TOM MARSHALL
Matches: 16
Batting: 353 runs @ 25.21, SR 74.63, Index 100
Bowling: 91-16-284-23 @ 12.35, Econ 3.12, SR 23.74, Index 6
Career stats: 790 runs @ 21.94; 49-896 @ 18.29
Half-term: B
Final Grade: B

Since half-term, Tom's bowling has improved rapidly, but this is at the expense of his batting, which collapsed, including driving straight to point for a duck in one game. As Tom leaves The John Lyon School, we'll look back fondly at his great service that he has provided to the school. He doesn't improve on the B he got at half-term, but we wish him the best of luck for the future.

VICE-CAPTAIN: SEERONE KANDASAMY
Matches: 14
Batting: 395 runs @ 32.92, SR 75.82, Index 109
Bowling: 10-0-56-2 @ 28.00, Econ 5.60, SR 30.00, Index 26
Career stats: 703 runs @ 29.29; 6-97 @ 16.17
Half-term: A
Final Grade: B

His form died away in the second half of the season, sadly. After half-term, his personal best was just 38. However, his early season form did win him players' player of the season at the end of season awards. With decent Joe Root-esque bowling prowess, we're sad to See-rone go (groan), and we'd like to wish him the best of luck for the future.

SHAHBAZ AHMAD
Matches: 8
Batting: 119 runs @ 14.88, SR 84.40, Index 99
Bowling: n/a
Career stats: 233 runs @ 13.71; 6-170 @ 28.33
Half-term: B
Final grade: D

Shahbaz Ahmad was dropped in the latter part of the season after Dhruv Maru impressed when deputising for him when injured. A poor batting average, in truth, and unproven with the ball in 2015, means our grade for him drops to a D. Nonetheless, we'd like to wish him the best of luck in the future as he departs John Lyon.

JAMES BOYLE
Matches: 2
Batting: 9 runs @ 9.00, SR 28.13, Index 37
Bowling: 4-0-30-0 @ n/a, Econ 7.50, SR n/a, Index n/a
Career stats: 9 runs @ 9.00; 0-30 @ n/a
Half-term: C
Final grade: D

James Boyle played against Saint Dominic's, and despite featuring in a minor fashion, impressed. His bowling can be overpitched on occasion, but there is certainly more to come from him, if not in 2015, then in 2016. However, at Merchant Taylor's, his dismissal for a duck was odd, and so, for an all-rounder, this isn't good enough.

JAMES FRANCIS
Matches: 14
Batting: 77 runs @ 8.56, SR 41.40, Index 50
Bowling: 61.7-3-331-12 @ 27.58, Econ 5.36, SR 31.08, Index 25
Career stats: 77 runs @ 8.56; 12-331 @ 27.58
Half-term: A
Final grade: B

Since half-term, batting took a nosedive, scoring just 29 runs after the half-term break at just 5.80, and this is just not good enough. The bowling remained decent, although he only took two wickets in the final seven games, but I think he was underused by Tom. When (shock, horror) a continuous first XI was developed (with just one change in the final few matches), James was used as the opening bowler from the Alperton End, but failed to take a single wicket in the last three games.

JASH GANDHI
Matches: 13
Batting: 169 runs @ 13.00, SR 73.48, Index 86
Bowling: n/a
Career stats: 169 runs @ 12.07; n/a
Half-term: D
Final grade: B

What a turnaround from half-term. Scraping into Wisden thanks to some gutsy late-season efforts, Jash Gandhi has shown he does deserve to be in the First XI. Well done, Jash. However, my grades reflect all of the term, not just this half, so D + A* = B.

KELLAN GHELANI
Matches: 14
Batting: 14 runs @ 4.67, SR 93.33, Index 98
Bowling: 78.6-6-426-22 @ 19.36, Econ 5.42, SR 21.55, Index 17
Career stats: 59 runs @ 6.96; 34-701 @ 20.62
Half-term: A
Final grade: A*

I have reclassified Kellan Ghelani on my spreadsheets as a bowler, and as such Kellan has impressed in that department to no end this season. As such, as I'm not terribly interested in his batting, Kellan gets an A* for 2015. Well done.

JAKE LAMOUR-JOHNSON
Matches: 3
Batting: 14 runs @ 4.67, SR 34.15, Index 39
Bowling: 12.5-2-37-6 @ 6.17, Econ 2.96, SR 12.83, Index 3
Career stats: 108 runs @ 12.00; 10-141 @ 14.10
Half-term: C
Final grade: C

Jake Lamour-Johnson got his much-anticipated recall against Reading, but as he was a terrible flop with the bat, he does not end his time here on a high. We do wish him the best of luck for the future.

ZEESHAN MAHMOOD
Matches: 2
Batting: 6 runs @ 6.00, SR 23.08, Index 29
Bowling: 12-0-62-0 @ n/a, Econ 5.17, SR n/a, Index n/a
Career stats: 6 runs @ 6.00; 0-62 @ n/a
Half-term: C
Final grade: C

We said at half term that he needed to improve his consistency. This is even truer now, as in his other game against Westminster his bowling of the final over allowed Westminster back into the match when it seemed there was no way back for them. Must be more consistent, otherwise there may not be a chance of a recall, with the likes of Rhys Benjamin and Rahul Radia looking to come in.

OWEN MARSHALL
Matches: 15
Batting: 82 runs @ 13.67, SR 75.23, Index 89
Bowling: 93.10-19-382-24 @ 15.92, Econ 4.10, SR 23.67, Index 11
Career stats: 85 runs @ 10.63; 27-519 @ 19.22
Half-term: A
Final grade: A*

I cannot fault his batting this season, and his bowling has been fabulous. There's not much to say after half-term, only that he ended up as leading wicket taker.

DHRUV MARU
Matches: 11
Batting: 161 runs @ 80.50, SR 94.15, Index 175
Bowling: n/a
Career stats: 175 runs @ 43.75; n/a
Half-term: B
Final grade: A

With Dhruv Maru seemingly having given up on the battle to get behind the stumps (it looks certain to go to Alex Mirzai) he needed to prove something with his batting. And by golly, he did. Certainly nailed on for 2016, in our opinion. The one criticism is that he doesn't have great staying power, and almost always gets out stupidly.

AAKASH PATEL
Matches: 12
Batting: 145 runs @ 18.13, SR 80.56, Index 99
Bowling: 14.3-0-78-2 @ 39.00, Econ 5.45, SR 43.50, Index 25
Career stats: 149 runs @ 16.56; 3-111 @ 37.00
Half-term: B
Final grade: B

OK, so the part-time bowler experiment seems to have failed. But with the bat, he's definitely got something. Aakash is, it is claimed, "a man of many talents". We're just not sure what they are yet.

KISHEN PATEL
Matches: 2
Batting: 0 runs @ 0.00, SR 0.00, Index 0
Bowling: 5-1-17-0 @ n/a, Econ 3.40, SR n/a, Index n/a
Career stats: 0 runs @ 0.00; 0-17 @ n/a
Half-term: B
Final grade: B

Not much to add from half-term, having been given the "TFC" award (thanks for coming: didn't bat, didn't bowl, didn't take a catch) against Westminster.

DILSHAN PEEREZ
Matches: 9
Batting: 160 runs @ 26.67, SR 50.79, Index 77
Bowling: 1-0-12-0 @ n/a, Econ 12.00, SR n/a, Index n/a
Career stats: 266 runs @ 20.46, 1-34 @ 34.00
Half-term: D
Final grade: A

Well done, Dilshan. Doing more with the bat than most in practically half a season, if only he had been in the side for the full season, rather than only coming in after half-term. Dilshan will not care about the batting strike rate or index. He is the antidote to Dhruv Maru, showing that staying in is most important. The perfect Test Match player.

RAHUL RADIA
Matches: 5
Batting: 34 runs @ 17.00, SR 130.77, Index 148
Bowling: 23-2-112-4 @ 28.00, Econ 4.87, SR 34.50, Index 23
Career stats: 34 runs @ 17.00; 4-112
Half-term: A
Final grade: B

Rahul can't keep up with Owen and Kellan, and as such there really isn't a place in the side for him at this time.

DISHANTH SATKUNARAJAH
Matches: 12
Batting: 28 runs @ 7.00, SR 87.50, SR 95
Bowling: n/a
Career stats: 78 runs @ 6.00; n/a
Half-term: D
Final grade: C

With his keeping improving a lot in the second half of the season, Dishanth retires from John Lyon perhaps not in the best form with the bat, but did very well behind the stumps. We wish him the best of luck for the future.

ROHAN SHARMA
Matches: 3
Batting: 14 runs @ 7.00, SR 56.00, Index 63
Bowling: 14-1-61-1 @ 61.00, Econ 4.36, SR 84.00, Index 44
Career stats: 14 runs @ 7.00; 1-61 @ 61.00
Half-term: B
Final grade: B

An excellent medium pacer, I'm not quite sure whether to label him as bowler or all-rounder. He may play regularly in 2016.

MARCUS TIGHE
Matches: 10
Batting: 156 runs @ 26.00, SR 101.30, Index 127
Bowling: 6-0-53-2 @ 26.50, Econ 8.83, SR 18.00, Index 39
Career stats: 188 runs @ 17.09; 2-53 @ 26.50
Half-term: A
Final grade: B

In the second half of the season, Marcus was a man on a mission. That mission appears to have been to self-destruct, averaging just 7.7 in his last seven games.

And as a little treat, here's a schematic of the Sudbury Playing Fields:
